Introduction to Filmmaking - FILM 101

This course will jumpstart with a general review of independent productions and
feature filmmaking. Covering a wide variety of topics such as film types and genres,
production equipments and software, as well as an overview of today’s highly
diversified film market.

Course breakdown: What it means to direct a film. The types of film and filmmaking.
Review of basic equipment and production components. Discussion of genres.

Pre-production and Conceptualization

There are crucial steps to prepare for before sparking the lights of a production. In
this course, participants will learn to brainstorm, plan and visualize their projects
before shifting the necessary gears into motion. The course will also answer the
burning questions that for eons haunts millions of filmmakers – What is a checklist?
& How do I  produce films within the right budgets?

Course breakdown: Steps to a production. Production outlines and guidelines.
Things to look for in planning and budgeting. Casting a film, and concept
brainstorming session.

Writing for Screens and Storyboarding Part I & II

A fluid and consistent script is the vital artery of any film. This course will teach
participants how to write a proper script with the appropriate style, form and plot. The
second part of the course will demonstrate the process of storyboarding and
retrofitting scenes to create synchronicity and compatibility to the actual filming.

Course breakdown: Types of screenplay and storytelling. Storytelling techniques.
Screenplay formatting. Plot types and development. Target audience. Script to film.
Scene by scene breakdown. Storyboard translation to actual filming.

Production Management 101

Controversy over angry tirades is a drag. This course will prepare participants to
handle the stressful environments of movie sets. In addition, the course will explain
the importance of coordination between casts and crews, how to maintain
professional working relationships and keeping production equipment, props and
sets up to industry standards.

Course breakdown: Personnel and departments. Coordination with cast and crew.
Props and sets. Dealing with production obstacles. Things to prepare and lookout for.

Production, Lights, Camera and Action

This two-period course will cover the basics of camera work and independent
production. Participants will learn how to adjust the proper lighting on various indoor
and outdoor sets, the different styles of cinematography and most importantly – how
to shoot a feature film.

Course breakdown: The use of prop, settings and equipments. Cinematography
styles. Lights and shadows. Electric and grip work. Safety and hazards. Stunts and
effects. Actors and scenes.

Camera Specifics (RED Cam + Sony Ex1 or Sony Ex3 Test
day)

Familiarize yourself with the state of the art video cameras. Filming equipment has
evolved rapidly over the past decade and in this session; participants can learn the
fundamentals of using the latest digital video cameras and how to utilize them to
their fullest capacity.

Course breakdown: camera specs and function. Technical adjustments and
maintenance.

Transfers, Digitizing and Audio Syncing

It’s time to plop that raw footage onto the chopping board. This course will cover the
technical elements of transferring film footage, how to perform captures and logs,
audio synching and digital formatting.

Course breakdown: File transfer, Logging and audio syncing + EDL’s, Digital
formatting. Programs and software.

Audio Specializing: Music, Sound Effects and Mastering

Music can be the soul of your work, or its greatest detractor. This course will
demonstrate the funk that is alive in the backdrop of any editing room – the sound of
crisp, unfaltering scores of compositions - and how to render them into a feature film.

Course breakdown: Matching scenes and music. Music and sound rendering.
Scores and composition. Programs and software.

Post-production: Editing + Composition Part I & II (FINAL
CUT STUDIO PRO)

This course will teach participants how to conduct post-production work and
assemble a full feature. What goes on in an editing room reflects the
completion of a film. Individuals will be taught the formulation of the final stage in a
production.

Course breakdown: Programs and software. Assembling your film. Methods of
compiling, cuts and rendering. Fluidity and tempo.

Film Business and Distribution

The world of film business has more twists and turns than a corkscrew. In today’s
fast pace and ever-changing film market, there are rules to abide by and holes to
dodge. In this course, participants will see a detailed glimpse of various marketing
strategies involved in publicizing one’s film and achieving worldwide distribution.

Course breakdown: How to market your film and achieve distribution. Overview of
today’s industry and deals. The variety of markets available: festivals, fundraising,
and finance – the 3 F’s to making or breaking your movie.

Directing Feature Films

Directing feature films is no game. When dealing with actors and scene structure
a director's vision is to assemble the world which we view in cinema. Learning how
to deal with performers of all calibres is important for any director to know but when
dealing with actors on union and non union shoots there are specific guidelines and
rules that must be followed in order to achieve the best performance, scene setups
and visualization of your shots.

Course Breakdown: Directing Feature Films will take students through the necessary
steps of combining scene structure with performance. Students can look forward to
learning about: Blocking a scene, art Direction, visualization of shot & scenes,
working with performers and other talent.
